Here, at AW RV World, we are continually looking at ways where we can support our customers to achieve the great Aussie dream of owning an RV – whether it be a camper, caravan or motorhome. We are excited to announce that we now offer cars, 4×4 and tow vehicles for sale in a range of makes and models to suit any budget. This will allow our customers to collect their camper or caravan with their suitable tow vehicle all in one location, all set up, and more than ready for your first adventure.
Keeping safe on the roads while travelling is the most important factor when deciding on a tow vehicle. Here are some important points when looking at an appropriate vehicle to tow your caravan.
Towing Mass – Your caravan’s loaded weight must not exceed your vehicle’s towing mass capacity. You can find the towing mass either stamped on your tow bar or in your vehicles manual. The rating will include a trailer weight capacity and a trailer ball weight capacity, both of which should not be exceeded. There may be alternate towing equipment required if travelling off road.
Brake Controller – All trailers that are 750kg GTM or more must be fitted with brakes. Most commonly used are electric brakes and majority of new caravans are fitted with these. Electric brakes require a brake controller to be fitted in the tow vehicle, with appropriate connections to the caravan. If purchasing your tow vehicle from us we can ensure this is already set up on delivery; otherwise this can be done at your local auto electrician.
Performance – While towing a caravan, your vehicle’s acceleration, efficiency and braking performance will decrease, as well as affecting vehicle control and maneuverability. If you are planning to travel to off road locations you will need a tow vehicle that is suitable and operational for those conditions. Engine size, brakes, weight, tyres, and suspension are just some of the factors that can contribute to your vehicles performance while towing.
If you have any questions about what is a suitable tow vehicle for your caravan, feel free to contact our helpful sales team. In the future, we will be looking at reviewing some of the popular towing vehicles to assist you even further.
